JFK Jr. And Carolyn Bessette Are Back From The Dead To Snatch The Hearts Of New Yorkers Once Again In “Love Story”

FX’s Love Story

The 1990s have officially returned to the small screen with the premiere of FX’s Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette. As the first installment of Ryan Murphy’s latest anthology series, the show has quickly become a focal point of conversation for New Yorkers, many of whom still remember seeing the "Prince of Camelot" and his fashion-icon wife walking their dog, Friday, through the streets of Tribeca.

The nine-episode limited series, which debuted on February 12, 2026, aims to pull back the curtain on a relationship that was often defined more by paparazzi snapshots than by the people behind them.

In the 1990s, the social pulse of New York wasn't tracked by an algorithm, but by the weight of a glossy magazine hitting a doorstep or a newsstand. Public identity was curated by gatekeepers at Vogue, Vanity Fair, and The New Post, where a single full-page spread carried more cultural capital than a million modern followers.

For New Yorkers of that era, "trending" meant being captured in a grainy, long-lens shot in the "Styles" section of the Times or the back pages of New York Magazine. Without the instant connectivity of a smartphone, the city's elite lived in a high-stakes world of analog mystery, where status was defined by the exclusive guest lists and physical storefronts that the rest of the world could only glimpse at through a laminated cover.

Casting the Icons

Finding actors to inhabit two of the most photographed faces in history was no small feat. The production ultimately chose a blend of established talent and fresh faces:

  • Paul Anthony Kelly makes a striking acting debut as John F. Kennedy Jr., capturing the athletic ease and mounting pressure of a man trying to carve out an identity under the heaviest last name in America.

  • Sarah Pidgeon stars as Carolyn Bessette, moving from her role as a Calvin Klein publicist to the center of a media firestorm. Critics have particularly praised Pidgeon for capturing Bessette’s transition from a confident career woman to someone increasingly isolated by the flashbulbs.

  • Naomi Watts delivers a nuanced performance as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, portrayed here as a protective matriarch navigating her final years while trying to guide her son's legacy. Her dialogue is incredibly impactful, thoughtful, and resonates very deeply throughout the episodes she appears in.

  • Dree Hemingway stars as Daryl Hannah, portraying the actress during her on-again, off-again relationship with JFK Jr. preceding his relationship with Carolyn.

  • Alessandro Nivola stars as Calvin Klein, the iconic fashion mogul famous for throwing underwear models on massive billboards across Times Square, and mentor to Carolyn Bessette.

A Whirlwind Relationship

The series begins with the couple's electric first meeting and follows the "whirlwind" nature of their courtship. It doesn’t shy away from the friction that made them tabloid fixtures—including recreations of their famous public arguments, like in Battery Park—but it also offers an intimate look at their private life in their Moore Street loft.

Inspired by Elizabeth Beller’s biography Once Upon a Time, the show explores the "incompatibility of fame and love." For our readers who followed the original saga, the series serves as a bittersweet time capsule of a pre-digital New York, where the "Kennedy Curse" loomed large and the paparazzi were the only "social media" that mattered. Every social post was instead a blurb or article in a highly anticipated glossy magazine and newsstands served as water cooler gossiping stations.

While the show currently holds an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it hasn't arrived without controversy. Jack Schlossberg, JFK Jr.’s nephew and current New York congressional candidate, has publicly criticized the project, calling it a "grotesque" attempt to profit from family tragedy.

Despite the pushback, the series remains a ratings hit for FX and Hulu, proving that nearly 27 years after that fateful flight to Martha’s Vineyard, the public’s fascination with John and Carolyn remains undimmed.
