Traveling Abroad
The New York Police Department is taking its tactical expertise to the global stage this month. The NYPD Emergency Service Unit (ESU) is officially competing in the UAE SWAT Challenge 2026, representing the United States in one of the world’s most grueling tactical competitions.
Starting February 7, the NYPD will join fellow American teams from San Antonio, Dallas, and Orlando to face off against elite international units. This seventh edition of the challenge, held at Training City in Al Ruwayyah, Dubai, is designed to push specialized units to their absolute limits.
For nearly 100 years, the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit (ESU) has been the specialized force that handles the city’s most dangerous and complex calls. From high-risk tactical entries to delicate technical rescues across the five boroughs, the ESU functions as both an elite SWAT team and a high-angle rescue squad. As a pillar of the Special Operations Division, they provide the essential tactical, medical, and counterterrorism support that keeps New York’s most volatile situations under control.
Five Days of Tactical Intensity
The competition is not just a display of force, but a rigorous test of the skills essential for high-stakes policing. Over the course of five days, ESU members will compete in challenges focused on:
Physical Endurance: Navigating complex obstacle courses under heavy gear.
Tactical Precision: Sharpshooting and strategic maneuvering.
Teamwork and Pressure: Executing synchronized movements in simulated high-stress environments.
The NYPD brings a unique edge to the arena, arriving with the extensive real-world operational experience gained from patrolling the complex vertical landscape of New York City.
How to Support the Team
For New Yorkers currently in the UAE, the event organizers are offering free tickets via the Virgin Megastore website to encourage a strong showing of American support in the stands.
For those of us staying local, you can still catch the action as it happens. The entire competition will be broadcast live on the official UAE SWAT Challenge YouTube from February 7 to February 11.
Supporting the NYPD on the global stage is vital because it allows our city's elite units to exchange cutting-edge tactical intelligence with international partners, ensuring that the officers protecting New York's streets remain the best-trained and most prepared force in the world. They will also be competing against other American police departments so they will not only be showcasing New York’s superiority internationally, but also nationally.
