The NYPD’s New Look: Why Patrol Cars Are Going Green

A Nod to the NYPD Flag

The streets of New York City are witnessing a visual transformation as the NYPD rolls out a major redesign of its iconic patrol vehicles. For the first time in decades, the familiar blue-and-white aesthetic is being updated with a striking green-and-white graphics package which started rolling out in 2024.

While the change might catch some by surprise, the new look is deeply rooted in the department's history and signals a push toward modern community engagement.

The most prominent feature of the redesign is the addition of five green stripes against a white background. This design is a direct homage to the official NYPD flag, which was adopted in 1919.

Each element of the new decal carries specific meaning:

  • The Five Stripes: Represent the five boroughs of New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island).

  • Historical Continuity: The color green dates back to 1658, when the "Rattle Watch"—the city’s first paid night watchmen who served under the Dutch when the city was a colony—carried lanterns with green glass. Cops at the time used to also carry wooden rattles, that they would use to either alert people of a fire or a crime.

  • The Canton: Some vehicle variations include a blue corner with 24 stars, representing the original cities, towns, and villages that were consolidated into the City of New York in 1898.

High-Tech Upgrades for New Yorkers

The redesign is more than just a cosmetic facelift. These vehicles, often referred to as Radio Motor Patrol (RMP) cars, are being equipped with several technological advancements aimed at safety and accessibility:

  • 360-Degree Camera Systems: New interior and exterior cameras provide a comprehensive view around the vehicle, enhancing officer safety and documentation.

  • Community QR Codes: In a move toward better transparency, the new cars feature QR codes on the exterior. Passersby can scan these codes to be directed to the NYPD’s official website to access department news or contact information.

  • Fleet Electrification: The "green" theme is also literal. The city has surpassed 1,000 electric vehicles in its law enforcement fleet, with many of the new green-striped designs appearing on hybrid and fully electric models like the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Phasing Out the Old

The previous design, characterized by a single thick blue stripe, was introduced in 1996. While those vehicles will remain on the road for some time, the department is transitioning to the new livery as older cars are retired and replaced.

As these new cruisers become a standard sight from Harlem to High Rock, they serve as a mobile reminder of the city's unified history and its shift toward a more high-tech, sustainable future. For our readers, seeing the green stripes is a sign that the next generation of the NYPD fleet has officially arrived.
