On September 10th, 2025, conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot at a debate event for his Turning Point USA organization on the Utah Valley University campus. His death sparked large debates on social media about whether it was right to mourn someone who preached hate towards many marginalized and minority groups. MAGA supporters—and even President Trump—broke down over Kirk’s death. Here’s a look into the right-wing propagandist’s ironic death and MAGA’s reaction to it.

On April 5th, 2023 in Salt Lake City, Kirk stated, “I think it’s worth it… I think it’s worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights.” Unfortunately for Kirk, on September 10th, he became one of those gun deaths.

Kirk was holding a debate event for his conservative organization Turning Point USA at Utah Valley University the day of his death. The event was a part of what was called “The American Comeback Tour.” Kirk was in a tent with the words “Prove Me Wrong” printed on it when he was shot in the neck and fell off of his chair. He was rushed to the hospital immediately and announced dead shortly after. Based on videos that circulated online it was unlikely he would’ve survived the wound even if he had received immediate medical attention on the scene.

Before Kirk was shot, someone asked him: “Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America over the last 10 years?” Kirk responded: “Counting or not counting gang violence?” After that moment, a shot rang out and blood was seen pouring from Kirk’s neck. Charlie Kirk is well known for using extremely aggressive verbiage and language that many describe as hate speech. His death is particularly ironic considering he strongly opposed gun control and died during a question related to gun violence, something that Charlie Kirk frequently debated. The suspect is Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old white man from Utah who turned himself in to Washington County sheriff's office.

Trump Reacts

According to Politico, Trump blamed Kirk’s death on “the radical left.” He claimed that their hateful speech towards conservatives led to Kirk being shot and killed. This is particularly ironic considering Charlie Kirk’s messaging and rhetoric is considered by many to be inflammatory, combative, and aggressively partisan.

“This kind of rhetoric is directly responsible for the terrorism that we’re seeing in our country today, and it must stop right now,” Trump stated.

To honor his conservative right-hand man, who contributed greatly in spreading the president’s conservative and MAGA ideals, Trump ordered for American flags to be lowered across the United States. Charlie Kirk has frequently touted claims and talking points often supportive of President Trump and MAGA’s agenda and political ideas, so much so that he could objectively be described as a propagandist. “He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us,” Trump said.

Turning Point USA, whose focus was spreading conservative ideas to schools and universities, was responsible for gaining many young voters for Trump. Kirk went around college campuses promoting Trump’s policies and is known widely across the internet for videos of him arguing with young liberals who vastly disagreed with his ideas. Because of this, the right-wing propagandist was very popular among MAGA supporters.

Following the news of Kirk’s death, many MAGA conservatives broke down. Glenn Beck, conservative radio host, burst into tears on BlazeMedia, asking for people to pray for his “dear friend Charlie.” Beck hosts The Glenn Beck Program, a nationally-syndicated radio show. He formerly had television programs on Fox News and CNN’s Headline News.

Will Cain, a reporter for Fox News, described Kirk as “an incredible and good man, not just to me but or anyone who holds a microphone or anyone involved in politics.” Cain often mixes perspectives from sports, culture, politics, and law in his commentary. He tends to present himself as a conservative voice but with a focus on culture and societal issues, not just party politics.

Conservative activist Laura Loomer stated, “The best way President Trump can reinforce Charlie's legacy is by cracking down on the Left with the full force of the government.” She went on to call the Left a “national security threat.” Her activities and statements have made her a polarizing figure in American politics, with supporters viewing her as a staunch defender of conservative values and free speech, while critics condemn her for promoting hate and spreading misinformation.

Elon Musk, who recently had a falling out with Trump, claimed that “the Left is the party of murder.” Musk showed up as a major figure for The Department Of Government Efficiency or “DOGE,” often depicted publicly as leading the charge to cut federal bureaucracy.

Some MAGA supporters have even blamed Comedy Central’s show, South Park, for Kirk’s death, claiming that it mocked his college events and Christian faith. But most MAGA enthusiasts, like Trump, solely blame the Left. Far-rightist Andrew Tate called it a “civil war.”

Many MAGA supporters demanded for action to be taken against the Left even though the real issue at hand is gun control. Chirstian nationalist Joel Webbon claimed, “The Left will not stop until they are forced to. The Right must gain power, keep power, and wield power righteously.” Republicans, as the party of gun rights, are unlikely to support gun control—even when their own leaders are targeted by gun violence. Instead of pursuing policies to address the issue, they often shift blame to the left.

Many Democrats fought back after being blamed for Kirk’s death by Trump and MAGA supporters. Some looked into the suspect’s family and discovered that his parents, Amber Jones and Matt Robinson, are registered Republicans. There’s even a photo that Amber Jones had posted on Facebook resurfacing the internet, which shows her children holding firearms at an event in Salt Lake City

Democratic scientist Joel Montfort stated, “Raised in the stereotypical all-American white conservative family with a sheriff for a father, Tyler grew up around guns and knew how to use them. It's the guns.”

Despite the claims made by Trump and MAGA, there is little proof that Tyler Robinson is a radicalized left-wing liberal. But the last thing MAGA would do is consider that the political leaders they looked up to could’ve been killed by one of their own.

Actor Billy Baldwin stated on X, “Not Black. Not Trans. Not Muslim. Not an Immigrant. Not a Democrat. Meet Charlie Kirk assassin Tyler Robinson. A white Christian, Conservative, Republican male with a gun... again.” The first thing many Republicans like to do is dissect school shooters by their racial, ethnic, or political identity, and use that as ammunition against them, when in reality if elected officials simply passed policy to control guns and improve mental health in America, situations like this would not happen.
